Older Australians shouldn’t have to leave their pets behind just because they are moving into residential aged care. Our pet-friendly policy encourages people to bring their pets to live with them. We have had many pets stay with us – past and present at both the Moonee Valley and Reservoir home.
Embracia Aged Care takes an innovative and holistic approach to care. Allowing pets is an evidenced based and person-directed care principle. The best part is living in a pet-friendly aged care home has multiple health benefits for both the owner and fellow residents.

What are the benefits?
Choosing to bring your pet provides a sense of comfort, purpose and companionship. Recent studies have even found links between pet ownership, healthy ageing and wellbeing.
In Australia, only one in five aged care facilities are pet friendly. In some cases it can be difficult for older Australians to find a home that will accommodate both them and their furry companion.
This is a shocking figure considering the numerous benefits pets bring to their owners. Pets are proven to reduce stress, depression, ease loneliness, increase physical activity and independence in aged care residents. They even decrease blood pressure and the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
Many studies have found links between pets, healthy ageing and improved wellbeing, including companionship,
a sense of purpose, increased social interaction, physical activity and independence.”

Support for Pets in Aged Care
Due to incerased demand, awareness and research – there’s growing support for providers to accommodate pets and provide extra assistance. The Companion Animal Network Australia (Australia CAN) wants to see government funding and assistance in Australia for seniors with pets in home and residential aged care.
Embracia sees firsthand how much joy the pet-friendly policy brings to residents, staff and visitors. Embracia Reservoir and Moonee Valley homes have several very lovable pets living there right now! If you or your loved one are interested in bringing a pet, contact one of our friendly team members to disucss your options.
